Beyoncé 'Formation' analysis
As part of my research I have looked at Beyonce's music video for "Formation". Beyonce is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress and filmmaker. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child. Beyoncé has been very vocal for the Black Lives Matter movement. Her song "Formation", which she sang at the 2016 Super Bowl halftime show, gained criticism from some politicians and police. Some police tried to get The Formation World Tour boycotted by other members. Beyoncé has said that she is against police brutality but is not anti-police.
Music video Genre: experimental, no story line
Context: Beyoncé's music video for 'Formation' is a black Power Anthem to contribute to black history month and the Black Lives Matter movement. This song was released a day after what would have been Trayvon Martin's 21st birthday and a day before what would have been Sandra Bland's 29th birthday, these two being focal points of the black lives matter movement. overall the song and music video were surprise released.
Some of the lyrics that promote her protest are:
"I see it, I want it; stunt yellow bone-it" “Yellow bone” refers to being black but having light-skin. In light of the barrage of skin bleaching allegations against her, Beyoncé says here that she’s proud of being a light-skinned black woman and will flaunt it regardless of others' thoughts.
